A Look at Cover Design

Confession: I only buy pretty books. So much so my husband told me I need to stop buying books because they look good (there were a couple of picture books that weren’t great but they look great on the shelf 🙃).

But let’s be honest. Who doesn’t do this?! If we are browsing the bookstore or library, we usually pick up a book because something caught our eye. We were drawn to the outside package before we even knew what the inside contained.

So creating cover that’s visually interesting AND tells a story is so important. Here is a recent cover I created for Dallas Woodburn. She wrote a book to help others write a book and she really wanted to tell that story on the cover. I created a flat lay image depicting the tools of the trade, the good ol’ pencil, accompanied with some fun doodles to keep the tone fun and happy and to tie in the innumerable amount of edits that are sure to follow shortly after writing the book. It’s light and bright and relatable to her audience.

The Interior

Dallas really wanted to add some doodles to the chapter headings so we created this series of drawings, illustrating the writer’s journey from start to finish. Thanks for stopping in! Stay tuned for more cover examples…

And if you’re ready to go on your project, let us know!
